Google Search Console for PrestaShop: sitemap, setup and indexing fixes

Verify your shop with a Domain property, generate a sitemap with PrestaShop's free Google sitemap module and submit its index file. Then use the Page indexing report: most PrestaShop warnings come from filter URLs, product combinations and disabled products, and each has a known fix.

Verifying a PrestaShop shop in Search Console

Search Console offers two kinds of property. A Domain property covers every version of your shop at once, with and without www, http and https. It can only be verified with a DNS record. A URL-prefix property covers one exact address and has more ways to verify.

Verification methods and how each one works on PrestaShop.

The PrestaShop sitemap: the free Google sitemap module

PrestaShop's own Google sitemap module is free and covers what most shops need. It writes one sitemap per shop and language, plus an index file that lists them all.

  1. In the back office, open Modules › Module Manager, find Google sitemap and install it.
  2. In its settings, choose what to include and click Generate sitemap.
  3. Copy the cron URL the module shows and schedule it to run once a day on your hosting.
  4. Regenerate robots.txt under Shop Parameters › Traffic & SEO, so it lists the sitemap.
  5. In Search Console, open Sitemaps and submit the index file, for example 1_index_sitemap.xml.

Google no longer accepts sitemap pings (it retired them in 2023), so modules that still advertise “search engine ping” do nothing extra. Submitting in Search Console and listing the sitemap in robots.txt is enough.

PrestaShop indexing problems in Search Console, and their fixes

The Page indexing report lists every URL Google found but did not index, grouped by reason. On a PrestaShop shop, most of them come from a handful of shop settings.

The warnings PrestaShop shops see most, what usually causes them, and what to do.

Duplicates

Duplicate without user-selected canonical
Usual PrestaShop cause
Filter URLs with ?q= from faceted search, sort and currency parameters
What to do
Keep ?q= out of the crawl in robots.txtPrestaShop 9 already blocks it
Alternate page with proper canonical tag
Usual PrestaShop cause
Product combinations and ?page= pages pointing to their main page
What to do
YesUsually nothingThis is the canonical working as intended
Page with redirect
Usual PrestaShop cause
Redirect to canonical URL sends a 302 by default
What to do
Set it to 301 under Traffic & SEOA 302 tells Google the move is temporary

Not indexed

Crawled, currently not indexed
Usual PrestaShop cause
Thin category and product pages, near-identical descriptions
What to do
Improve the contentGoogle says there is no need to resubmit
Discovered, currently not indexed
Usual PrestaShop cause
Too many filter and combination URLs for a small crawl budget
What to do
Cut the duplicate URLs first
Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt
Usual PrestaShop cause
PrestaShop 9 blocks filter URLs in robots.txt and marks them noindex
What to do
Pick one of the twoGoogle cannot see a noindex on a blocked page

Errors

Soft 404
Usual PrestaShop cause
Disabled products still shown with a 200 status
What to do
Redirect to a similar product or categoryOr return 404 or 410
Not found (404)
Usual PrestaShop cause
After upgrading to PrestaShop 9, the product URL format changed
What to do
Save your old routes in the back officeOr redirect the old URLs with 301s

Out-of-stock products are not a problem. Google recommends keeping the page live and marking it out of stock, which is what PrestaShop does.

Tracking keyword positions next to Search Console

Search Console tells you what happened, a day or two late and averaged over every query. ManteIQ reads the same Search Console data every day, adds a measured position check for the keywords you track, and estimates what each move is worth from what those pages earn in your shop.

ManteIQ's tracked keywords for a demo shop: the overall position improving from 9.7 to 8.5 over three months, and a table with each keyword's position, change, search volume, Search Console clicks and impressions, and the revenue at stake.
Tracked keywords on ManteIQ's demo shop: position over three months, with Search Console clicks and the revenue each move is worth.

It also answers the question most shop owners ask about SEO: is it working? Over two, six or twelve months it shows how many keywords climbed, how many slipped, and roughly what that is worth a month.

ManteIQ's 'Is the SEO working' summary: 11 keywords up and 5 down over two months, weighted position from 9.2 to 8.5, and an estimated revenue effect of about €151 a month.
The two-month summary on the same demo shop. The revenue effect is a labelled estimate, not actual revenue.

Questions about Search Console on PrestaShop

Where is the PrestaShop sitemap URL?
With the free Google sitemap module, the index file sits at the shop root, for example https://yourshop.com/1_index_sitemap.xml, where 1 is the shop ID. Submit that file in Search Console under Sitemaps.
Does the PrestaShop sitemap update by itself?
No. The free module rebuilds the sitemap only when you click Generate or when its cron URL runs. Schedule the cron once a day so new products are included.
How do I verify PrestaShop in Google Search Console?
The most durable way is a Domain property verified with a DNS record at your domain provider. If you cannot edit DNS, use a URL-prefix property with Google Analytics, a meta tag in your theme's head.tpl or an HTML file in the shop root.
Why does Search Console show so many duplicate pages for my PrestaShop shop?
Usually filter URLs from faceted search (?q=), sort and currency parameters, and product combinations. Most of them already point to the right page with a canonical tag; block filter URLs in robots.txt if Google keeps crawling them.
Why did my PrestaShop URLs return 404 after upgrading to version 9?
PrestaShop 9 dropped the category from the default product URL. Shops that never saved their routes in the back office got the new format after upgrading. Save the old route format, or redirect the old URLs with 301s.
